Set of six Muggletonian prints, c. 1846 —SCARCE
Set of six Muggletonian prints intended to demonstrate that the earth is at the center of the universe. after designs by Isaac Frost, engraved by W.P. Chubb and Son, printed by George Baxter, with his unique and masterful oil color printing technique that permitted subtle gradations for a glowing effect, 10 inches x 12 1/2 inches (each), c. 1846 —SCARCE (made for private use and never widely circulated)
*The Muggletonians were an obscure Christian sect (or cult) which began in 1651 when two London tailors announced they were the last prophets foretold in the biblical Book of Revelation.
Of their many unusual beliefs, they insisted on an anti-Newtonian scriptural understanding of the universe, with an adamant belief that the sun revolves around the earth. They also believed that God is between 5 and 6 feet tall and resides exactly 6 miles above the earths surface. When hot-air ballooning came about in the late 18th century, the Muggletonians attempted to ban them because they might crash against the sky. True evil is the unclean reason of men, and that angels are the only beings of pure reason.
Members of the sect attained a degree of public notoriety by cursing those who reviled their faith.
