*The mystical symbolic language of Tantric drawing (or painting) is only understood in depth by a handful of initiates, making the tradition of this particular sect of Hindu image making truly esoteric and incredibly rare.
While this piece is by an anonymous maker, the heir of the collection from which it came, mentioned that it was created by a Brahmin and astrologer that had significant knowledge of shaligrams- a type of tantric symbol used in meditation to aid in evoking the deity, Vishnu. The specific form represented here is of Kapil Narsing Murthi variety of shaligrams, with a related mantra in calligraphy.
The heir to the collection also described this piece with the following-
“Thing which makes this lot special is the text with description. What these shaligrams actually means and their names. Usually 2 people are involved in making such work- one who knows about the subject is the one who guide what has to be made and other is the artist who actually make. This is an example of the same. This is a page which describes what pattern has to be made and what color has to be filled and then the person with knowledge would write about them.”
